The findings would likely have been stronger if the patients had been given zinc, but zinc from diet could still have contributed to the positive results of this study.
On August 24, researchers published data on 8,075 Belgian patients and concluded that hydroxychloroquine by itself, at correct dosages, reduced mortality by 32%. By that date, most of the Western establishment had already moved on from even thinking about hydroxychloroquine. The data was from March–May when hydroxychloroquine was widely used in Belgium, before the publication of the later-retracted study led to suspending its use throughout much of Europe. This observational study is meaningful for two reasons: It is the largest study showing statistically significant benefit using hydroxychloroquine on covid-19 patients.
